De Ayasofya is een meesterwerk met zijn innovatie architectuur, rijke geschiedenis, religieuze betekenis en buitengewone kenmerken als de grootste gebouwde Oost-Romeinse kerk. De kerk is drie keer gebouwd op dezelfde locatie en het is ’s werelds oudste en snelste voltooide kathedraal. Na de verovering van Constantinopel door de Ottomaanse sultan Mehmet II, werd de Ayasofya omgebouwd tot de keizerlijke moskee van het Ottomaanse rijk. In de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw, werd er begonnen met restauratiewerkzaamheden, waardoor het voor publiek werd gesloten. In 1934 werd de Ayasofya heropend als museum zonder religieuze praktijken. Een decreet in juli 2020 veranderde dit, toen werd de Ayasofya weer officieel een moskee. Wel is de moskee nog steeds open voor toeristen en kun je deze dus nog steeds bezoeken.

Het Topkapi-paleis ligt op het puntje van het historische schiereiland in de wijk Sultanahmet. Het paleis is een van de iconische bouwwerken van Istanbul. 400 jaar lang was het Topkapi-paleis het administratieve, educatieve en artistieke centrum van het Ottomaanse rijk. Het was de residentie van de Ottomaanse sultans. Het Topkapi-paleis herbergt onschatbare heilige relikwieën die worden bewaard in Has Oda, de geheime kamer van de sultan. De belangrijkste relikwieën zijn de mantel en het haar uit de baard van de profeet Mohammed.

Dalyan is een klein plaatsje dat aan de zuidwestkust van Turkije ligt. Het is genoemd naar de gelijknamige rivier in de buurt en was vroeger een belangrijk vissersdorp. Tegenwoordig is het toerisme er de voornaamste inkomstenbron.
Het gouden zand en de ondiepe wateren van Iztuzu maken de bestemming populair voor dagtochten vanuit omliggende Egeïsche en mediterrane kustplaatsen. Toeristen die op vakantie gaan naar Dalyan worden vaak verrast door de authentieke sfeer in het kleine plaatsje. Kleinschalige accommodaties, laagbouw en boerderijen bepalen het straatbeeld en de directe omgeving en er is ook nog genoeg geschiedenis te vinden.
Het Iztuzu strand, het belangrijkste strand van Dalyan, is een broeigebied voor schildpadden. Hierdoor zijn watersporten bijvoorbeeld verboden. Andere beroemde gebieden rond Dalyan zijn onder meer de rots graven op een heuvel die dateren uit 400 voor Christus. Toeristen kunnen hier ook genieten van modderbaden, die door de zwavel en de hoge temperatuur een geneeskrachtige werking zouden hebben.

In Efeze vind je onder andere de Tempel van Artemis, ooit een van de zeven wereldwonderen. Helaas is er van deze tempel nog weinig over. Ook is er een theater die plaats biedt aan 24.000 bezoekers, ooit het grootste ter wereld in de oudheid. De bibliotheek van Celsus is één van de grootste bouwwerken van Efeze en is goed bewaard gebleven.
Het bezoeken van deze oude stad is verplicht voor cultuurliefhebbers. Slenter langs tempels en verken de Romeinse rijtjeshuizen met hun wonderbaarlijke intacte mozaïeken. Een bezoekje aan Pamukkale is, vanwege haar ligging, perfect te combineren met een zonvakantie aan de populaire Turkse badplaatsen. De plek heeft 17 verschillende baden met allemaal verschillende temperaturen tussen de 36 en 100 graden. Het heilzame water zou goed zijn voor mensen die problemen hebben met hun gewrichten, maag- en darmen en huid.

Pamukkale trekt zoveel belangstelling dat het nabijgelegen Hierapolis soms vergeten wordt. Hierapolis werd in de 2de eeuw voor Christus gesticht. Het slenteren door de smalle straatjes en langs de authentieke huisjes geeft een tijdloos gevoel.

Het biedt een informatieve kijk op de geschiedenis van Turkije. De andere belangrijke bezienswaardigheid is het kasteel van Ankara, waar je een 360 graden panoramisch uitzicht hebt over de hele stad. Verder zijn er tal van musea en historische moskeeën dagelijks geopend en heeft Ankara ook een geweldig nachtleven.

Ölüdeniz betekent ‘dode zee’ in het Turks en wordt zo genoemd vanwege de rust en de kalmte. Het is een van de populairste – en meest gefotografeerde – stranden van Turkije, dankzij de spectaculaire ligging van de prachtige Blue Lagoon.
Je kan in dit resort naar twee verschillende gebieden. Het eerste is een lange, brede strandvlakte met uitzicht op de Middellandse Zee, dit heet ook wel het Belcekiz strand. Een wandeling langs de achterkant leidt uiteindelijk naar het tweede gebied, het strand van Kumburnu en de Blue Lagoon. Beneden bij de Blue Lagoon heb je een klein hutje, hier kun je even genieten van een verfrissend drankje. Op zoek naar meer vertier? In Ölüdeniz vind je veel bars en restaurants waar je echt even kan bijkomen tijdens een lunch of diner.
Zowel het strand als de Blue Lagoon zijn de laatste jaren een populaire toeristische attractie geworden. Door de enorme mensenmassa’s kan het er enorm druk zijn en ja, daarmee verliest het naar onze mening wel een beetje zijn charme. Het is er echter zo prachtig, dat een bezoekje zeker niet mag ontbreken op jouw bucketlist.
