Het plein van Sultanahmet

Het plein van Sultanahmet staat ook wel bekend als Hippodrome en wordt omgeven door de Blauwe Moskee, Hagia Sophia en Museum van Turkse en Islamitische Kunst. Het is een populaire ontmoetingsplaats en de toeristische zone van Sultanahmet. Het leidt naar alle historische bezienswaardigheden rond het historisch centrum.

Op het plein zelf kun je lekker rondslenteren en de 4e-eeuws Hippodrome uit het Byzantijnse Rijk, de Egyptische Obelisk en de Duitse fontein bekijken.

De Blauwe Moskee

De Sultanahmet-moskee staat in het westen bekend als de Blauwe Moskee. De naam komt van de beroemde blauwe ‘Iznik-tegels’. De moskee werd gebouwd tussen 1609 en 1616 in opdracht van sultan Ahmet I. Het is één van de meest bezochte bezienswaardigheid en moskee in Istanbul. Let wel op: Het mag dan wel een toeristische attractie zijn, de Blauwe Moskee is ook een actieve moskee. Dit betekent dat je bepaalde gedeeltes in de moskee niet kan bezoeken tijdens het gebed. Verder moet je je uiteraard houden aan de kledingvoorschriften.

Hagia Sophia

De Ayasofya is een meesterwerk met zijn innovatie architectuur, rijke geschiedenis, religieuze betekenis en buitengewone kenmerken als de grootste gebouwde Oost-Romeinse kerk. De kerk is drie keer gebouwd op dezelfde locatie en het is ’s werelds oudste en snelste voltooide kathedraal. Na de verovering van Constantinopel door de Ottomaanse sultan Mehmet II, werd de Ayasofya omgebouwd tot de keizerlijke moskee van het Ottomaanse rijk. In de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw, werd er begonnen met restauratiewerkzaamheden, waardoor het voor publiek werd gesloten. In 1934 werd de Ayasofya heropend als museum zonder religieuze praktijken. Een decreet in juli 2020 veranderde dit, toen werd de Ayasofya weer officieel een moskee. Wel is de moskee nog steeds open voor toeristen en kun je deze dus nog steeds bezoeken.

Het Topkapi-paleis ligt op het puntje van het historische schiereiland in de wijk Sultanahmet. Het paleis is een van de iconische bouwwerken van Istanbul. 400 jaar lang was het Topkapi-paleis het administratieve, educatieve en artistieke centrum van het Ottomaanse rijk. Het was de residentie van de Ottomaanse sultans. Het Topkapi-paleis herbergt onschatbare heilige relikwieën die worden bewaard in Has Oda, de geheime kamer van de sultan. De belangrijkste relikwieën zijn de mantel en het haar uit de baard van de profeet Mohammed.

Tot slot vind je in het Topkapi-paleis ook nog de beroemde harem, het privégedeelte van het paleis waar de echtgenotes en bijvrouwen van de sultans woonden.

Basilica Cisterne

De Basilica Cisterne is gelegen ten zuidwesten van de Ayasofya. Het is gebouwd door de Byzantijnse keizer Justinianus, in de 6e eeuw voor Christus. Het is een groot ondergronds waterreservoir dat door het publiek ‘Yerebatan Cisterne’ wordt genoemd vanwege de ondergrondse marmeren zuilen. Omdat er vroeger een basiliek boven de cisterne was, wordt deze ook wel Basilica Cisterne genoemd. Het is een indrukwekkend bouwwerk met 336 zuilen. Behalve enkele van de randen en gegroefde kolommen van de stortbak, hebben de meeste ervan de vorm van een cilinder. Twee Medusa koppen, die worden gebruikt als steunen onder de twee kolommen aan de noordwestelijke rand van de cisterne, zijn het grote kunstwerk uit de Romeinse tijd.

De Arasta Bazaar

Museum voor Turkse en Islamitische Kunst

Gelegen in het Ibrahim Pasha-paleis, is het een van de belangrijkste gebouwen van de 16e-eeuwse Ottomaanse civiele architectuur. Het museum toont zeer uniek, meer dan 40.000 items op de tapijt-, manuscript-, hout-, glas-metaal-keramische en etnografie secties.

Hurrem Sultan Hamam

Gulhane Park (Rozenpark)

Gelegen tussen de Sultanahmet en Eminonu, Gulhane Park (Rose Garden) is een van de mooiste parken in Istanbul voor zowel toeristen als de lokale bevolking. Het park beslaat een enorm gebied. Van Kadikoy en Uskudar: Neem een openbare veerboot naar Eminonu en neem vervolgens de Bagcilar-Kabatas tram (T1 lijn) van de halte Emoninu naar Sultanahmet
Vanuit Taksim: Vanaf de halte Kabatas of een van de andere haltes langs de Galatabrug neem je de tram Bagcilar-Kabatas. Om bij deze tramhalte te komen, kun je vanaf het Taksimplein een soort ondergrondse kabelbaan nemen richting Kabatas.
Hou er rekening mee dat het plein van Sultanahmet en de meeste verbindingswegen verboden terrein is voor autoverkeer. Wij raden dan ook af om met jouw eigen auto naar dit gebied te komen, je zal je auto ver buiten het centrum moeten parkeren en alsnog met het openbaar vervoer verder rijden.
Bekijk de spoorwegenkaart voor de tramhaltes in Istanbul en de veerbotenkaart voor de veerboten, zo weet je precies welke tram of boot waar heen gaat en stopt.
