De betekenis van ‘Zafer Bayramı’

Tijdens Zafer Bayrami worden de overwinningen van 1922 op de Griekse bezettingsmacht herdacht en gevierd. Turkije voerde in deze periode zijn onafhankelijkheidsoorlog onder leiding van Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. De oorlog eindigden uiteindelijk in 30 augustus bij de slag bij Dumlupinar, waar de vijand werd verslagen. Daarom is het op die dag, elk jaar weer, feest. Ook worden er bloemenkransen neergelegd bij het Mausoleum van Atatürk in Ankara
